Kasparov was arrested on November 24, 2007 by riot police in Moscow while trying to march on the federal election offices to present a letter of protest against Putin and the upcoming election, and was subsequently given a jail sentence of five days. He was released from jail on November 29, 2007.
Garry Kimovich Kasparov is a Russian chess grandmaster of Armenian-Jewish descent, former World Chess Champion, writer and political activist. He is a candidate for the Russian presidential race of 2008.
