Solar and geothermal energy.

Local organic food sources.

Pesticide-free playgrounds.

Outdoor education.

These are some of the initiatives launched by the Ecopolis Forum in Iowa City. Along with non-profit groups like Backyard Abundance and Field to Family, Ecopolis co-hosted a school board candidate forum on sustainability issues in 2015, focusing on the role of solar energy and local food initiatives, alternatives to pesticides and herbicides, as well as STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education in the Iowa City public school system.

Over the past year, Ecopolis Forum members have been working with the Iowa City Community School District on solar energy projects, as well as a moratorium on pesticide and herbicide use in the schools.
