Important Security Information

For your next summer flights, you may have to check to see whether your clothes are ‘peaceful enough’: T-shirts with offensive images could be a danger to other people.
Is that real? Is your gun real?

Gun T-shirt – ‘it is a security risk’ at a London airport. BBC News. 2 June 2008.
A man wearing a T-shirt depicting a cartoon character holding a gun was stopped from boarding a flight by the security at Heathrow’s Terminal 5.

PRESS RELEASE Updated – 20 June 08 – www.Check-Check.org

Online since September 2007, check-check.org focuses on airport security regulations. In particular, we put the spotlight on the tactics of fear-mongering that are being employed in airports – for some time now authorities have been with people’s minds in their attempt to generate a culture of anxiety.

Recently, Airport Security Measures have come under strong criticism. People are finally feeling free enough to debate the absurd hysteria and exploitation that has defined the post-9/11 world.
We would like the image of our project to serve two purposes. Firstly, we wish to join with and contribute to the recent wave of support for rationalism and independent thinking. At the same time, we wish to clearly oppose the counteroffensive of certain specific groups – those who would maintain and increase social controls, those who are involved in the business of security devices, and those who promulgate a vision of the world as being in a state of emergency.

Our efforts and research continues in this area because we believe it to be a symbolic representation of this sort of war propaganda. These issues affect everyone, regardless of whether they are involved in the debates surrounding politics, war or freedom.

So, We are delighted to introduce new stuff about the Transportation Security Administration:

- An art installation which displays ordinary objects seen in a new, dangerous light. In the context of the airport, many objects that ordinarily seem harmless are seen as potential weapons of destruction.
http://www.paolocirio.net/work/check-check/check-check.php

- A blog with selected updated news about TSA security measures, like the funny t-shirt case and other incredible stories which happen daily in all the airports of this small world.
http://check-check-reality.blogspot.com

- We are glad to announce our detailed interview requested by Voices of Resistance from Occupied London in the Issue Three, Urgencies of Everyday life: Between Here and the Outside
http://occupiedlondon.org/checkcheck

- And we are continuing our online platform in order to deprogram people from PsyOps of the Security Theatre. Because “Contrary to state-owned media or international political agencies, the Internet is said to be an effective therapeutic tool for a variety of symptoms and disorders, for its displaced, non-personal, but direct connection.” Check-Check.org wants to get in touch with all beings suffering from the ambivalence of reality and would give you the opportunity of a self psycho-analyzation in the airport scenario.

EUROMAYDAY 008

leave a comment

What’s EuroMayDay?
A transnational demonstration of precarious and migrant people held the First of May in more than a dozen European cities. The first MayDay Parade was held in Milan in 2001 (it now attracts 100,000 people). EuroMayday is a process by which actions and demands are put forward to fight the widespread precarization of youth and the discrimination of migrants in Europe and beyond: no borders, no workfare, no precarity!

Who organizes EuroMayDay and what for?
The EuroMayDay network, a web of media activists, labor organizers, migrant collectives convening each year in a different European city.
Last mayday assembly was in Berlin, where it was agreed that these would be the demands for EuroMayDay 008:
• full legalization for all persecuted migrants
• self-organizing and unionizing rights freed from state repression
• unconditional basic income
• a european living wage
• free access to culture, knowledge, and skills
• the right to cheap housing

Where will EuroMayDay 008 occur?
In Aachen – Berlin – Copenhagen – Hanau – Hamburg – Helsinki – Lisboa – Madrid – Malaga – Maribor – Milano – Napoli – Palermo – Terrassa -Tokyo – Wien.

This year, there is a focal point in Aachen/Aix-la-Chapelle, where Nicolas Sarkozy will present Angela Merkel with the EU Oscar, the Prix Charlemagne. Irony of the calendar, in 2008 syndicalist MayDay coincides with catholic Ascension Day, when the Karlspreis is handed out. This year for MayDay in Aachen, two worlds will clash together

What kind of people participate in EuroMayDay Parades?
Activists, artists, hackers, unionists, migrant associations, precarious2precarious networks, queer collectives, leftist radicals of all stripes: red, black, green, pink, purple, silver.
They are coming to Aachen and other EuroMayDay Parades to join the fight against a EU dominated by police security and financial privilege, by Barroso’s neoliberalism, Trichet’s monetarism, Solana’s militarism…

MAYDAY! MAYDAY! no borders, no precarity, let’s defeat the new inequality!

The Influencers

leave a comment

The Influencers explores controversial forms of art and communication guerrilla, presenting independent projects that play with global popular culture, infiltrate the mass media, and transform fashions, consumption and technological fetishism.

The key to The Influencers is found in its guests and stories: impostors, pseudo-totalitarian musicians, conceptual hackers, deviant geographers, anarchitects and actors from invisible theatre. In these three days they are going to present their work, show known and less known material and speak with the public about challenges, goals and strategies.

With The Influencers, the border between disciplines is erased (since the message really is the message, and the medium is just a tactic), links between apparently distant projects are found, and bold genealogies are drawn between different countries and generations. Ambiguities are also explored and contradictions are discussed. In the manipulation of everyday symbols, as well as within what is excessive and politically incorrect, we will possibly find inspiration for changing the present and imagining the future.

Transmediale 08 is conspired

leave a comment

Transmediale Festival is finished. It was the first edition for the new artistic director Stephen Kovats. The Festival main location was, like in the past the House of World Culture, a really beautiful building in the middle of Tiergarten. There you can enjoy the exhibition and partecipate at the conferences, that were really interesting.
The exhibtion was installed in a big place compared to the past, and it was really well mounted. Personally i think that the exhibition was really well curated, taking piece that presents different aspects of the conspiration and presenting them trough completely different media like installations, videos, visual art, graphic art. The curator of the exhibiton was the young Natasa Petresin-Bachelez from Slovenia, who did really great work.

The jury of transmediale.08 award nominate 1. prize to Julia Meltzer and David Thorne for their work “Not a Matter of If but When” (Video, 2006). Then the 2. Prize was awarded to UBERMORGEN.COM, Paolo Cirio and Alessandro Ludovico for their project “Amazon Noir – The Big Book Crime” (Web project, 2006) and the 3.Prize to Gordan Savicic for his project “Constraint City: The Pain of Everyday Life” (Intervention, 2007).

Many performances during the day and the night, particularly i appreciate SPECIAL PLAYER at C-base, realized by 02L. This italian group continuing a path focused on interactive playground, realized an immersive system trough which the audience can interact with images and soundf in a really effective way.

About ClubTransmediale i’d suggest the performance of Sonic Wargame, a collaborative musical performance where the best musician is rewarded by a “musical moderator”, which choose the signal to be sended to the audience.

It’s Your Passenger Talking To You…

leave a comment

An FAA report reveals that the computer network in the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner passenger jet setled in the Dreamliner’s passenger compartment, designed to give passengers in-flight internet access, is connected to the plane’s control, navigation and communication systems. The two system are linked and separated just trough a firewall…

The report continue saying that there can be serious security vulnerability in its onboard computer networks that could allow passengers to access the plane’s control systems. What about a passenger that can infiltrate the navigation system trough that cute passenger’s joystick..

The revelation is causing concern in security circles because the physical connection of the networks makes the plane’s control systems vulnerable to hackers. A more secure design would physically separate the two computer networks. Boeing said it’s aware of the issue and has designed a solution it will test shortly.

“This is serious,” said Mark Loveless, a network security analyst with Autonomic Networks, a company in stealth mode, who presented a conference talk last year on Hacking the Friendly Skies (PowerPoint). “This isn’t a desktop computer. It’s controlling the systems that are keeping people from plunging to their deaths. So I hope they are really thinking about how to get this right.”

5th Amendment and PGP

leave a comment

On November 29, Magistrate Judge Jerome Niedermeier in Vermont a federal judge in Vermont has ruled that prosecutors can’t force the defendant to divulge his PGP passphrase. The Fifth Amendment protects the right to avoid self-incrimination.

First, the facts. Boucher was crossing the border from Canada to Vermont when border agents began to suspect he had child pornography in the car. They saw a laptop in the back of the car and opened it up. It was not password-protected, an an agent began to look through it. (By way of background, the Fourth Amendment has an exception at the border that makes this search legal.) The agent came across several files with truly revolting titles that strongly suggested the files themselves were child pornography. The files had been opened a few days earlier, but the agent found that he could not open the file when he tried to do so. Agents asked Boucher if there was child pornography in the computer, and Boucher said he wasn’t sure; he downloaded a lot of pornography on to his computer, he said, but he deleted child pornography when he came across it.

and the comments:

“I won’t be able to provide anyone for an interview,” said DOJ spokesman Jaclyn Lesch. “The point you raise is one that we would want to address in court. I hope you understand.”

We had asked the DOJ this: “In the DOJ’s view, under what circumstances can a person be legally compelled to turn over an encryption passphrase?”

I’m Not Afraid

leave a comment

I’m Not Afraid is a campaign started in august 2007 to tell the american governement that they’ve to stop to diffuse fear.
Down an excerpt from the campaign page:

Here’s what it means to not be afraid, here’s what it means to fight a real war on terror, and here’s what it means to win that war, instantly . . .

* It means that you do not participate in the public hysteria when terrorists attack, but instead react proportionally, placing the terrorist act in its proper place in the vast scheme of crimes, accidents, disease, natural disaster, and generic tragedy that is man’s lot on earth.
* It means that you do not permit the politicians to feel terror on your behalf. It means that you discourage them from fomenting and exploiting hysteria to expand their own power at the expense of traditional American principles.
* It means that you view terrorism as a matter for international police work, under the rule of law, and not a justification for bloated government programs, reckless wars, or the shredding of the Bill of Rights.
* It means that you recruit others to adopt your war winning strategy of not being afraid.
