Transmediale Call For Entries

leave a comment

CTM.09 – club transmediale’s 10th anniversary edition – takes place in Berlin from January 23 – 30, 2009 under the theme STRUCTURES – Backing-up Independent Audio-Visual Cultures. Our partner festival transmediale will take place under the Theme DEEP NORTH from January 27 to February 1, 2009.

The joint Call for Entries by club transmediale and transmediale is out now. As leading international festivals for art and digital culture as well as adventurous music and related visual arts, respectively, transmediale and club transmediale are calling for submissions for both festival’s program, to the transmediale Award competition and the Vilém Flusser Theory Award.

Deadline for submissions is September 5, 2008 (post stamp).

transmediale.09 – DEEP NORTH peers beyond the evolving alarmist scenarios of catastrophe prevalent in the often contradictory global warming debate.transmediale.09 shifts this focus to the global artistic, cultural, societal andphilosophical consequences that the presumed imminent collapse of the polar ice barrier may trigger. Are we about to reach another historically succinct moment of unavoidable and cataclysmic change – a point of no return leaving in its wake uncontrollable global transformations? Does climate change elicit cultural change, ashifting of extremes or a collapse in established, systemic and network norms? DEEP NORTH becomes not a fixed location, but a paradigm transforming loss, scarcity, inertia and rivalry into urgent and revealing states of being and expression.

With STRUCTURES – Backing-Up Independent Audio-Visual Cultures, club transmediale.09 presents projects that spring from the critical, interdisciplinary and experimental practice at the intersections of sound and other art forms. In recent years, a new breed of hybrid projects and initiatives that merges experimental audio and media cultures has developed in the convergence-zone between pop culture, science, arts and media technologies. This still remains primarily the domain of committed individuals and small, self-organised groups or networks that, often in the most precarious of circumstances, provide the supporting platform for these new artistic articulations and experiments. In its 10th year, CTM looks into the current state and potential development opportunities of these independent structures.

Together, transmediale and club transmediale invite the submission of works and projects that respond to these challenges and embody contemporary notions of art that embrace, question and enrich digital culture. Submissions of art works for both festivals participate in the transmediale Award 2009 while theoretical abstracts, papers and critical artistic positions are invited for the Vilém Flusser Theory Award, with prizes totaling ca. 10.000 EURO.

transmediale will handle all practical issues concerning the submission process, as all submissions do participate at transmediale’s award competition – no matter if they are for transmediale or club transmediale. All details are to be found in the PDF form, which is available for download here.

LPM 2008 – LIVE PERFORMERS MEETING

leave a comment

From the 29th of may to the 11th of june 2008, in the Macello IV of the Mattatoio (Slaughterhouse) of Testaccio in Rome, the LPM – Live Performers Meeting will take place: the international meeting of live video performers, visual artists and vjs is back with a new edition, the fifth.

The 2007 edition had 295 artists registered from the following countries: France, Italy, Denmark, Germany, Spain, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Latvia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Poland, United Kingdom, Hungary, Austria, Turkey, Argentina, Portugal, Mexico, Macedonia, Israel, Lithuania, Australia, Croatia, Yugoslavia, Serbia, Algeria. There were more than 26.000 visitors during the 4 days of the meeting and the pre-view at “Palazzo delle Esposizioni”.

This edition will be in a special space, the Macello IV of the Mattatoio of Testaccio, one of the hystorical pavilions built by Gioacchino Ersoch between the 1888 and the 1891: more than 900 mq, perfect for satisfying the needs of the Meeting, that has developed more contents and has now a larger number of adhesion recquests and audience.

LPM suggests again the 4-day long formula. There will be interaction between the audience and the happenings on stage:: this exchange between the actions of the spectators and the “represented” actions will generate a unique event. Beside that the program will be full of workshops and showcases of projects, softwares and brand new products.
The LIVE VIDEO is obviously the main subject of the 4 days, characterized by the diversity of the considered themes and the various realties that will participate:

DIGITAL FREEDOMS
At the core of LPM is the ideology of free software for audio/video mixing. Thanks to the community of “FLxER” and the Linux Club in Rome, LPM has been able to flourish and give back to worldwide community of live video performers. This year there will be a whole day dedicated to the realities of live video connected with the concept of digital freedom. Not just Free softwares, Free hardwares, Open contents, Open sources, Hacking, among the protagonists of workshops, showcases, performances and vjsets, but even DegradArte: workshops, vj sets and live performances “degraded”, produced by Degradarte Novalab and ArtisOpenSource. These artists are inspired by the new current of scientific, tecnologic and aesthetic research , dedicated to the study of the “legally degraded artwork”.

8 BIT + ELETTROPOP
The video performers interested in the most particular and underground sounds of the general electronic-music concept(that is a common interest of all participants) will perform with 8-bit – and electropop-muiscians: the beats are generated by nintendo sounds , by samplers or by synthetizers and toys, and human voices are effected with vocoders or with various strange filters. The atmosphere will be “light and playful”, in order to amuse audience and participants.

BREAKBEAT + TECHNO + ELECTRO
Video performances and vj sets flow with the intense sounds and the persisting beats of electronic club music. The images are “moving” ready to enliven the dance floor ,following and interpreting the rythmn of the freshest Breakbeat and Drum n’bass, and from 2am to 4am going with the pulsating Techno and Electro sounds.

VISUAL GENDERS
A full day of Queer independent culture with the QUEER JUBILEE preview by the Phag Off Collective. This festival within the LPM is a manifestation of a project which is working on a national and international level to experiment with the language of representation in terms of gender politics and sexual orientations with the aim of deconstructing stereotypes and ideological power relationships.

There will be background videos and music for dinner, and after dinner dedicated AV performances and vjsets. As usual, at the end of the evening, open time for VJs will take place: vjs can perform freely, taking advantage of the available video consoles, projectors and monitors.

LPM 2008 maintains the spirit of a meeting, which has been its main characteristic since the first edition. It is conceived to be a place for comparison and exchange of information and ideas between vjs, visual artists, live-video performers and interested people. Experimentation is one of the founding elements of its ideology. All the gained funds will be invested in the most innovative technologies, in order to support research in the live visual field.

Similarity of ideals and common roots has prompted the LPM to become member of the Avit network, whose aim is to improve and promote the culture of veejaying events worldwide. After the first festivals in England, the Avit network expanded worldwide, establishing collaborations as in C23 in Germany (AVIT Berlin) and Vision’r in France (AVIT France) and LPM in Italy. This partnership of “network” and “meeting” is possible thanks to the common cultural background and the strong affinity of spirit and purposes.

LPM is not a festival, it is an opportunity
of meeting and of making yourself an idea of what visual-artists are creating or better, what they could create. Therefore, and in order to allow the many interesting artists to perform, the maximum length of a performance is 30 minutes.

The subscription to join LPM is FREE and is open now until the 15th of April, 2008. For details on how to subscribe, see the “participate” section of the website.

LPM is produced by Flyer Communication, organized by FLxER.net, with thanks to the cooperation of our international partners.

Emaf 2008: Identity

leave a comment

The motto of the 2008 festival is IDENTITY, reflected in film programmes, lectures and specials. Positioning by the media and artistic self-definitions will be pursued; individual, social and global identities in a rapidly changing world will be explored and queried according to subjective and scientific focalisations.

This year’s exhibition is completely devoted to youth. It demonstrates attitudes towards and images of adolescent realities from a variety of continents and cultures. In their contemplations and subjective interventions, international media artists grapple with the world of youth in very different ways. They seek out small and global communities – whether online or on their doorstep. The communities of web 2.0, with its participatory offers, whisper corners for chatting, online games and reciprocal assessments in social rankings, often function in a similar fashion to the clique at break time in the school yard. What are western youth’s attitudes towards music and fashion, rituals and rebellion, consumption and clichés, which simultaneously provide self-identification and boundaries? Completely different realities determine the everyday lives of youths in the Ukraine or Mexico, some of whom have to eke out a living as thieves. The subject of everyday violence and racism in South Africa is also broached in the exhibition.

The Congress takes up the subject of “Identity”, and reflects this in its lectures. The well-known media scientist Professor Norbert Bolz will talk about identity management. Digital identity – forms and consequences of the increasing capture of private data and their commercial exploitation are the subjects covered by Ralf Bendrath. In his lecture, Padeluun will explore the subject of data retention and will inform visitors about their actions, such as the “Big Brother Award”. Other speeches by Ricardo Mbarkho, Sophie Ernst, Martin Butler and Sophie Ernst.
Particularly important will be the Don DeLillo conference “Terrorism, Media, Literature: Don DeLillo and the Ethics of Fiction”, which will be at University of Osnabrück, April 25-27, 2008.

This year, fresh winds will blow at this historic location – the programme being shown there is explicitly geared towards youths and others who are crazy about new, current and sometimes way-out cinema. In addition to the established EMAF programmes “Media Art for Beginners” and the MC programme “Clip-Klapp-BuMM”, we have selected brand-new motion pictures and art-house films that explore the emotions of modern-day adolescents. For instance, a preview will be shown of the Indie icon and Golden Palm winner Gus Van Sant’s new film “Paranoid Park”. As in his previous films, van Sant shines the spot light on a world of adolescent outsiders, in this case a group of skaters, all of them young lay actors cast by van Sant via the internet platform myspace! “The Tracey Fragments”, a wild collage of image scenes arranged as fragments of the story, tells the story of 15-year-old Tracey, whose father insults his children, calling them “accidents”. She sets off to escape. But her odyssey increasingly resembles a nightmare, and she ends up only just managing to escape, dressed in a shower curtain …

RECORD STORE DAY (Record stores can’t save your life. But they can give you a better one)

Record stores can’t save your life. But they can give you a better one!
