For the BFI visual artist Pierre Bismuth and film director Michel Gondry have created a new version of The All-Seeing Eye, an installation which explores the themes at the core of the feature movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, directed by Gondry and based on an original idea by Bismuth; it won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, making Bismuth the only contemporary artist to have ever received an Oscar.
The All-seeing Eye shows subtraction as the metaphor for a world without communication and relationships: a room is stripped bare, the non immediately apparent visual erasure taking place creates a moment of displacement in the spectator comparable to the feeling experienced when a memory is lost, despite its strength and against one‘s will, simply by means of time passing.
The subtractive process of scenery changes, seemingly high-tech, was instead manipulated off-screen in real time while filming, an example of Bismuth and Gondry’s shared fondness for special effects created by low-tech or non-digital means.

In 1989, concerned about the growing evidence of the impact of hazardous environments on human health, WHO/Europe initiated the environment and health process to raise awareness and start collaboration between sectors – particularly the health and environment one – together through European ministerial conferences on environment and health: started in Frankfurt in 1989, followed by Helsinki in 1994 and London in 1999. The conference, held in Budapest in 2004, focused on children and launched the Children’s Environment and Health Action Plan for Europe to improve the protection of future generations.
As an intermediate milestone, an intergovernmental meeting (Vienna, Austria, 13-15 June 2007) reviewed the implementation of commitments made in Budapest. The next ministerial conference will be held in Italy in 2009.
Alcohol-related traffic deaths are at an all time high and is asking the countries to commit to the elimination of drunk driving.
According to the European Alcohol Action Plan 2000-2005, is fundamental to generate greater awareness of, provide education in, and build up support for public health policies that prevent harm from alcohol; reduce the risk of alcohol-related problems that may occur in the home, workplace, community or drinking environment; reduce both the breadth and depth of alcohol-related harm such as fatalities, accidents, violence, child abuse and neglect, and family crises; provide accessible and effective treatment for people with hazardous and harmful alcohol consumption and those with alcohol dependence;
provide greater protection from the pressure to drink for children, young people and those who choose not to drink alcohol.
Nevertheless as every summer Italians Mass Media with lacks of summer news decide to rise the question of Alcohol-related traffic deaths related to the discoteque as the origin of all the problems. Not the lack of transport, the car advertising, the driving license, the lack of parents. And the Italian health Ministry answered to all of that with a new drink driving campaign.
I am not talking about the Peroni – license to drink and driving Valentino Rossi - advertising campaign. Infact Peroni Nastro Azzurro which was first brewed in 1963, premium export brand and the biggest selling Italian beer outside Italy is not italian anymore. The adverts and NADA parties take part to the southafrican SABMiller’s international expansion strategy for the brand, following the acquisition of Italian brewer Birra Peroni in 2003. c’è più gusto a (non) essere italiani
Television is a telecommunication system for broadcasting and receiving moving pictures_sound over a distance. The word means “far sight”: from Greek tele, far, and Latin vision, sight (from vidére). From the root *weid- (to know, to see), also present in the English word wit, in the Sanskrit word veda, and the Slavic word videti and in the Latin word vìsus , sanskrit *vid, which means “face”.
What I am trying to say is that television is the first (inter) face. And face the first television.
Television is also called the tube especially in UK. It’s not surprising then, BBCwas the first international broadcaster to sign a major deal with the Youtube, Google-owned portal. Broadcast yourself! BBC immediatly understood that Youtube – as responsive* interface – is a perfect platform to reach out and to answer to international audience and to give easy access to new (and young) viewers around the world.
More: the videobloggin’ attitude is designed for helping recognize new style and areas for improvement. Or to (mass) customize? In the mean time European Commission is sharing “the sights and the sounds” of Europe on EUtube.
Al Jazeera is the next one on youtube. The English version is destined to be the English-language channel of reference for Middle Eastern events, by reporting from arabic world to the West. “With YouTube’s community of millions of online users this is set to dramatically increase,” said Al Jazeera English managing director Nigel Parsons. As much as it will increase the production of up-to-the-minute and up-to-date clips. A new(s) global strategy of Trailing vision?
However as is possible with YouTube, the full range of comment, rating and recommendation features will apply to TV videos, with users able to upload video responses to the TV’s and other viewers.
This idea of “responding to foreign demands” shows the fundamental irreciprocity of relationship which characterize communication structure of video response. According to the german philosopher Bernhard Waldenfels, responding results in dealing with foreigners. Responsiveness is considered to be a specific form of handling things we encounter. This handling does not implies anticipations of attitude and goes beyond any intentionality and regularity of behaviour: it is a peculiar logic of responding, which leaves “the foreign its distance”. (Waldenfels, Bernhard – Topographie des Fremden. Studien zur Phänomenologie des Fremden 1. Frankfurt/M.: Suhrkamp, 1997, p. 52).
For this peculiar logic of responsiveness the viewers find themselves already embedded at distance in this (foreign) world. The viewer is already the user. Further: Production is not free creation, and implies an ethical use. Otherness then receives a cultural (socio-moral-ethical) determination as “open correspondence” between foreignness and ownness. Broadcast yourself as (video) response becomes also pragmatically relevant to fade the distinction between inner and outer. Yourself is always in between. Again a (inter) face which operates symbolically, uniting a feeling with an image: the user is individual and unique. The feeling in this context “means” responsibility as Emmanuel Levinas briefly exposed in conversation with Richard Kearney
“The approach to the face is the most basic mode of responsibility. As such, the face of the other is verticality and uprightness; it spells a relation of rectitude”. You – user- shall not kill. (valbonesi@gmail.com)
The idea is simple: take your TV, your DVD player, your video iPod, your XBOX 360, your laptop, your PSP, and say goodbye to them all for seven days. Simple, but not at all easy. Like millions of others before you, you’ll be shocked at just how difficult – yet also how life-changing – a week spent unplugged can really be.
But there’s a lot more to TV Turnoff Week than shaking up your relationship with passive entertainment. It’s all about saying no to being bombarded with unwelcome and unhealthy commercial messages. It’s about saying no to unfettered corporate media concentration and to the democratic deficit that results. And it’s about challenging the heavily distorted reflection of the world that we see on the screen, a reflection that is keeping us ill-informed and unaware of the very real political and environmental crises that we all currently face.
This year, we’re returning to the kind of stunt that spawned the Adbusters Media Foundation and our ongoing Media Carta Legal Battle against the corporate gatekeepers that control access to the public airwaves. There are loads of ways you can get involved, whether it’s spreading the word with a poster campaign, posting our spots on your video blog, or making a donation to help us air the uncommercials on broadcast TV.
As a college educator I am tasked with preparing today’s students for their future careers. Implicit is that I should know more about the future than most people. I do not - at least not in the sense of specific predictions. But I can suggest some boundaries on the path forward. Let’s start with the three Laws of Future Employment. Law #1: People wil […]
I have long touted the sports strategy that Indianapolis used to revitalize its downtown as a model for cities to follow in terms of strategy led economic and community development. I really think it sets the benchmark in terms of how to do it, and it has been very successful. Indy is hosting the Super Bowl on Sunday, something that is locally seen a […]
Urbanibalism is the experience of the city as a natural source of food and form of life that grows autonomously from any planned ‘city ecology’. Against superficial aesthetics such as food design and bioart, urbanibalism explores the historical roots and the living matter at the basis of any culinary art. The city as a spontaneous convivium.
